Competition

The European Team Championships is the newest of the main competitions in European athletics. It all started in 2009 which means that the competition in Vaasa in 2017 is the seventh time. The competition has four levels and the one in Vaasa, the 1st League, is the second highest, just one step below the Superleague.

The predecessor to the Team EC, the European Cup, was intrioduced in 1965 and through the years it was held totally six times in Finland, two of them in Vaasa. In the Team Championships every country has one athlete in each event and the idea is to compete as a team. Every performance gives points according to the final standing in the, event. The three day meeting includes all together 40 individual events and the four relays. Both women and men are included in the teams which means 20 female and 20 male athletes in the individual events. The European Team Championships take place every year except the years of the Summer Olympics.
